So what's everyone's favourite Bill Murray film?
For me it's gotta be a tie between Stripes and Groundhog Day. I also love Caddyshack, though I prefer the performances of the other actors in the film. Ghostbusters wasn't too bad either, and Lost In Translation I'd also recommend (though it is by no means a comedy). Meatballs I can't help but have a soft spot for, despite my initial dislike of the film - it has its charm and is very much a film of its time, which endears it to me. That said, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's trying to get into him.

I actually only finished Ghostbusters yesterday - thought it was a bit slow at first, but definitely picked up and improved in the second half. Some great lines, such as when they were fighting with the EPA wanker. Now, I'm waiting for you to check out Stripes, which as I've said many times is a damn great movie

It's great, but... there's just so many better comedies from the 80's I think it's that it crosses over with fantasy and science fiction fans, and also appeals to kids. A lot of people have grown up with it so it has become a huge nostalgia piece. Add the great sense of humour of it and the elements come together for a hugely popular film.

Mate, Ghostbusters was an awesome movie. I remember loving it so much I wanted to buy a $1000 backpack thing (I forgot the name of their equipment) when I was a kid.... Man, was that funny. I didn't get a lot of the jokes though, but rewatching it when I'm older I realize it was more enjoyable than I realized.
That being said the plotline is really thin and honestly at some parts really stupid, but once you get over that I think you can have a good time. Also, I remember being young and thinking they didn't include more of the Black guy because he was black...Lol.
Also, Ghostbuster 2 IMO was a really funny film and it lived up to my standards. Again, the plot sucked but it was still funny. Not sure why everyone hates it for some reason.
It's just like Airplane 2, I found it funny like the original but everyone else seems to hate it.

Even Airplane had a pretty dumb plot, although (somewhat) more realistic than Ghostbusters.

I have to admit I could never get into Airplane (never checked out the second). It has its moments, but it has the same problem which I find with comedies of the sort like The Naked Gun - it just seems too lowbrow and gag-reliant. I dunno, it's hard to describe. But I can't really get into it

But I can't really get into it I think the lowbrow quality is ultimately the whole point. The entirety of Airplane is one giant extended dad joke but it works for a few reasons IMO. 1. The deadpan delivery. This is what has me howling throughout. It's so absurd that these characters can deliver such disturbingly seedy or just awkward lines as if they're the most serious thing ever. One of the actors complained to the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abrams who were the major creative team behind it, that the lines weren't being delivered humorously. Yet that's the joke. It's so ridiculous that it's just hard to resist laughing because you imagine what would happen if that actually was said to you. 2. It is faithful to the tone of the films it is parodying which makes it a loving tribute yet also acknowledging how stupid the source material is. I've never seen Airport but the qualities of other disaster movies of the time are very noticeable even if you've never seen them. 3. The visual jokes. So silly that it's hard not to laugh. As for The Naked Gun, I only saw the first one and it's a lot of fun but I totally get why it wouldn't work for some.

But yeah, dad joke pretty much sums it up for me for now

What sort of "highbrow" humor do you enjoy? The Simpsons sure isn't very "highbrow". If anything TBBT is. And you don't like TBBT.

The Simpsons blends lowbrow and highbrow humour perfectly, whereas TBBT is one of the dumbest, most badly written shows on TV.

TBBT, the new seasons are quite forced and stupid. The show at it's peak was hilarious. How is it badly written? I remember you saying you don't like the characters because they're racist, which I don't really see. A lot of comedies have some foreign guy for comedic effect. I'm not sure I get the "highbrow" point of the Simpsons. It's funny, but because Homer acts like a fool half the time.

A lot of comedies have some foreign guy for comedic effect. I'm not sure I get the "highbrow" point of the Simpsons. It's funny, but because Homer acts like a fool half the time. It's badly written because every character is a cardboard cut out. Sheldon is socially inept to the point where it's completely unrealistic, Howard is a sex starved creep, Raj can't adapt to american culture (there's literally an episode where he has to be deported to india and says he's going to miss Steak, I mean COME ON!!!), and Leonard is.... actually what is Leonard. He's just a really smart guy who looks kind of dorky but is overall a lot easier to get on with than the rest of him. I guess he's just the straight man to the comedy but he's not that interesting. There is comedy written around these characters and it varies from irritating to just okay. Some of the scenarios are funny, but there's something painfully unsubtle about the delivery that I can't describe. Even when I was much younger and first got into the show and actually enjoyed it, I found it to be a little over the top at times. Not that there's anything wrong with over the top, it's just something I can't put my finger on, maybe it's a preference thing, just the tone never worked for me. Yet the major problem I have with it aside from the basic characters is that a lot of the jokes revolve around the fact that they're nerdy. I can see why some people like the in jokes to nerd culture but if you really want a good show for that then watch Community which is much more self-aware and a show that genuine self-admitted nerds will enjoy. As for it being racist, i'm not sure i'd go that far but the racially themed jokes aren't particularly clever. I think the highbrow part of The Simpsons comes from it's outstanding satire. It has this grip on society i'm not sure i've ever seen before. At least, in it's glory days it did. It's real and it's raw and it's bitter and pessimistic yet it still has an awful lot of heart. The dramatic episodes genuinely effect me because they work but it rarely lost touch of that anger at the way the world is controlled by organisations. It's also an insanely accurate if obviously exaggerated account of the dysfunctional family. It of course is far from being subtle and that's where the lowbrow part comes in but if more lowbrow humour is used effectively, there's not really anything wrong with it.

I'm not really much of a nerd, as in that I don't enjoy card games and Star Trek but I think the show appeals to nerdish people. A lot of the jokes allude to nerd culture oftenly. I'm really not sure what social commentary the Simpsons are pushing. I've watched a couple scenes and I don't know at all. I can see that Simpsons can be dramatic at times, like that one video about Homer talking a photo of himself every year (or week?)

Not so much that, it's just it can't really replicate the charm of the early stuff and there's some bad jokes and out of character decisions. Yet there's some great parts too.
