You know the drill. One of the grand old traditions from APFFN.
I'll get things rolling with this:
"As Tears Go By" - Marianne Faithfull
Vs.
"Broken English" - Marianne Faithfull

As much as I love "As Tears Go By", both the version by The Rolling Stones (who wrote it) and Marianne (who was the first to record it), I have to say that Marianne really finds herself with "Broken English". It's cool and swaggering yet dark and uncomfortable. There's something very slick yet very understated. It's a walking contradiction and shows Marianne coming much closer to an auteur status.

VS Alright let's do this. I Palindrome I- Interesting song, I've never heard a piece from They Might be Giants before, and just listening to it once I'm not exactly sure I get the meaning of the song, but I love the title though, very clever. Aside from that, musically speaking, it's really pleasing to the ears. It definatley has a more soft rock feeling than a hard rock feeling, which I found very easy to listen to and enjoy. Sounds like a little fun tune that I can listen to whenever I want. And this is unrelated, but the album cover also looks amazing. If there was any problem I found with it, nothing much, maybe it was a little bit too short, for a song that started out really quickly. Other than that it was a very nice listen. 9/10. I Love the Unknown- Feel like you showed me this before, but I'll give it another listen. Okay, I'm about halfway into the song, and I'm absolutley blown away so far. I didn't expect it to be this good. When the first guitar strumming started and the vocals started playing I knew I was in for a really impactful song. The music video and the lyrics were honestly really inspiring, and while musically I felt there wasn't anything that makes it stand out and it just sounds like a lot of other pop/rock songs I've listened to, what's important was the feeling that I got from it. It invoked really strong emotions inside me while being very entertaining throughout at the same time. Some minuses were that some of the parts where he speaks, his voice sounded too different from the rest of the song. Didn't really enjoy those parts, and I feel as if the song started out with a lot of energy but in some parts that energy was lost, although it was quickly regained. Overall a very enjoyable song, I'd give a solid 9.5/10. I love the unknown definatley wins it for me. Also, I thought we were supposed to do some kind of topic-related songs or something? So my topic is Russia vs USA again, this time representative songs of the countries. Russian- Glavnoe, chto est' ty u menya (What's Important is That I Have You)- Lyube This song is most commonly interpreted as being a song about Slavic brotherhood. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q5APrKWlP8English- Born in the USA- Springsteen Yes, I know, not the most pro-American song, but still a very good representation of America. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPhWR4d3FJQ

As for themes, it's optional. The russian song is good but the way russian people sing doesn't do it for me generally. It's not bad but it's a cultural different I rarely am able to get used to. I'm going for Springsteen here, which is a great song.

Well first of all agreed on "Broken English". As for Kelan's round, gotta go for the song by They Might Be Giants - though neither are exactly my cup of acid tea. Finally gotta go with Springsteen for Stevie's round. Now, here's mine Vs.

I am at a loss of words. I'm going with PPAP as that's less...Sexual. What the actual hell lol LMAO. Anyways, time for a new vs match. Theme: Hip-Hop without rapping; VS Might take me a while DJ Shadow- Okay I have no idea how to feel about this, since there aren't any lyrics, I think that makes it better, imaging this with rap lyrics I feel would take away from the musical quality of the overall song. I like the synth sounds though, they're very well placed and almost doens't sound like Hip Hop at all for me (at least according to my very limited knowledge), not sure if you know what it is, but sounds a bit like a bit more relaxed version of Vaporwave music. There's nothing really to complain about, while it's no musical genius, it's definatley listenable and a very calming song. Since I like Vaporwave, this one I actually enjoyed. Although there were some weird parts with the whole "Meow-meow-meow" parts and all, overall a good listen. 7.5/10. Kanye- YOU AINT GO THE ANSWERS okay. You call this hip hop? I call it more like Neo-Classical music. Surprisingly enough, while Kanye's music oftentimes doesn't do much for me, the orchestral music paired up with the piano really brings out a wide diversity of feelings and I almost feel as if this could be used in a movie soundtrack. Such a very well-written composition, but the problem was that the song didn't have much diversity (musically) and was very awfully short. Not much else to comment on, other than the weird album cover, overall I'd give it an 8/10. So I'll go with Kanye, although I'm not a particular fan of neo-classical music, this piece at lest definatley sounds pleasing to me.

I think the Kanye piece is more or less an intro to another song hence why it's so short. As for Shadow, the debut album Endtroducing is a masterpiece for me. Every single sound on it is sampled, mostly from obscured recordings. And it's all memorable, creative and sounds different to the original pieces. Took him a year to make it.

I'll attach some screenshots. See the film reel thing? Click that: I quite dig Paul Pena's track. I like blues quite a bit and this has an interesting experimental vibe as well as country influences. It's a bizarre hybrid. This said it's so long. Ruins it for me. As for this version of House of the Rising Sun, I really dig the guitars and the wind instrument but the tuban throat singing, well. I'm not sure what to think. I respect it as a valid vocal delivery but it's culturally very far off from what i'm used to. Because of that it's not something i'd listen to often. Also because of that it's genuinely hilarious. I'm picking Bugotak for the laughter I got out of it and the musical eclectic nature (that solo). Regarding Paul Pena, I wouldn't be surprised if he was an influence on Captain Beefheart. Here's why: VS

Not sure how to think of Beefheart...I can see that you tied it with Pena for being bluesy and experimental at the same time, but it sounds awfully too experimental and werid. I did crack a smile or two while listening and it definatley raised some eyebrows lol. The album cover is probably the most psychadelic of the bunch. I have no idea what the meaning was behind it, but it sounds like a very...Odd track for sure. Zappa- Another very weird song, I have no idea what the hell to say about this. I will say that I like the feeling that I get from it though, the slightly eerie but also the silly feeling is a very nice and odd mix that I can dig. As it goes into the song, I think it becomes significantly better. I love the guitarwork and the hard nature of the entire song. The instrumental parts are equally great and his voice, even when he's singing random crap about muffins, he makes it sound so cool. Zappa for sure mate.

Gotta go with Beefheart though, which sounds less like a song and more like a cartoon on ice - leaving Muffin Man in the dust as tame and forgetful in comparison. This time the theme shall be "Long past their use-by date" Vs.

I dunno.... vocally he sounds like he's in pain and struggling. Chuck Berry at least doesn't sound like he's in physical agony Neither of them are doing very well. Anyhow: Melodic death metal bands cutting out growls: VS Sorry I'm late, I'll post my round in a seperate message. First- Tiamat- Do You Dream of Me My goodness, it starts off good the slightly eerie feeling and the switching between the two notes creates a really dark yet mysterious atmosphere that's one of the best openings to a song I've heard. The vocals are really fitting to the instrumental part of the song and each of the lyrics are placed in a manner that they have such an impact. It definatley doesn't have any metal feeling in it but the odd and uneasy atmosphere it creates is a really nice mix. Unrelated, but the music video of the paper man (or something) again continues with the creepy-like atmosphere. Problem: The song ends way too abruptly and I'm left somewhat unsatisfied. Maybe it's just the video, but the ending could've been a lot better. 9/10. Amorphis- Thousand Lakes I feel somehow that the melody is about the same as the first one but it's just the piano. Problem is that the piano sounds awfully flat at the beginning and I feel if they added maybe a bit of an echo it would've had more of a creepy feel, instead it sounds like it's out of tune at the beginning. It gets better as the song goes on and a chorus part joins in along with more notes on the piano (lol), and while I suppose musically it's a pretty good song, especially near the end, it never invokes the same kind of feeling or atmosphere that the first song did, and although it had some good parts and the ending was fairly enjoyable, overall I would'nt choose it to be much. 6.5/10 Tiamat. That song was so good I'm gonna use it for my movie.

Winds of Change is quite an impressive performance but that's all it is. It's a guy on a talent show covering a great song in his own style. It's not something that will stick with me. Paul Pena it is for me, really enjoyed that one.

Fair fair, he only chose that one because it seemed to be the only one where he covers a somewhat classical song.
