Alright, time for my next round I guess: VS Although I must admit that the track from A Love Supreme has really grown on me (really have to check the album out again), I just have to choose So What - it is after all my favourite Miles Davis track. When You And I Were Seventeen - Nick Lucas Vs. Ain't We Got Fun - Van And Schenck

Glad to hear that track is growing on you. As for two songs from The Great Gatsby, neither do it for me, but they're not necessarily bad, just not my personal niche. I guess "When You And I Were 17. Next round now. Leftist protest songs of the Thatcher Administration:

Okay just to clarify to all of you, I posted this theme due to the discussions around The Final Cut lately which afterwards then sparked me to make a thread that revisits the Thatcher discussion on the old legacy. That's why this topic is a bit spread across the forum. So there's your explanation if you're startled a bit by the focus as of late.

Yeah i'm not a big fan of the final cut as an album due to the weakness of the musical arrangements (in at least half the cases), the pretentiousness of some of Roger's lyrics, and the overall lack of emotion much of the songs actually offer (imagine some of the feel of Dark Side of the Moon or Animals to present the narrative, would make it so much better), however if you look into the way the story of the the teacher from Your Possible Pasts evolves it is breathtakingly constructed. Just breathtaking. Does that make me like the album? Well, sort of, not really, it's um, uh, it's okay. Yet if I look below the surface level there's a whole lot of passion. I think the title track gets that passion down better than any song on the album. It's the lowpoint of the story and it's just brilliant. As for the last round, i'm going for Spectrum. It's a great song, whereas Chain's song has good guitar work but all in all just feels generic to me. I feel like this has just been done before.

Next round now. Leftist protest songs of the Thatcher Administration: VS I really dig the lyrics to the Billy Bragg song, but The Final Cut's just too good.... definitely one of the best songs off the album of the same name.... Theme: 70's Battle Of The Harps I'll Be Gone - Spectrum Vs. Black And Blue - Chain Let’s do this Spectrum- A very country feeling song with the harmonica and all. The aesthetics of the music video I’ll say I actually like very much though. It’s definatley an interesting song, it has a very 70s country feeling to it and a nice bass line as it that really sticks to me. The vocals, while they aren’t exactly my style, they’re pretty good and the chorus is very pleasing as well. Surprisingly enough it doesn’t ever get boring and it always manages to have a very uplifting attitude that keeps me bobbing my head and involves the listener a lot. The lyrics, while they might not be the most impacful in the world, seem to have good meaning and stick with me. The juxtaposition of harmonica tunes with drums, bass, and guitar with vocals also seems to work together well in harmony. Overall however it’s not a very special song and I’ve heard many in the same style that were better. Overall just a 7/10, enjoyable but not special. Chain- Very interesting intro, almost sounds like a traditional song actually. The vocals I’ll have to say are some of the best, but also very strange…The guy has a very distinct and unique voice, that’s very suited for the type of song he’s singing, but it’s so unorthodox I’m not sure how to take it in. I will say that he has a very rough and enjoyable voice though. The entire intro s almost structured like it’s a chant or something, even the rest of the song with the chorus in the background actully. The entire atmosphere of the song, I really love, it has a nice slow feeling with the bass in the background, and that Harmonica solo blows me away. But then again, the negative part is the chanting transitions are slightly too unorthodox for me and I don’t feel that they fit in well musically with the song. Listening to the lyrics though, I suppose it generally fits in. Tough decision, I’ll give it a 7.5/10 though. So Chain, but they were both pretty strong and weird at the same time, just Spectrum I felt a little more grit with it. Theme- FINLAND FINLAND BEST COUNTRY EVER Loituma- Levan Polkka vs Värttinä- Kylä vuotti uutta kuuta SUOMI STRONG!

More Socialist Politics from Billy Bragg: VS Woody Guthrie's violent attack on his landlord Fred Trump (Father of Donald): Easily Woody Guthrie for me actually. As much as I agree with what Billy Bragg's singing about.... I dunno. There's something about it which is a little cringeworthy.... Hard Times - The Beach Boys Vs. Carry Me Home - The Beach Boys

Carry Me Home - The Beach Boys Yeah I agree with what Bragg's saying but in the context of the time I definitely disagree with the underlining themes. I love the music though. Terrific guitar. I'll let someone else respond to your round or just post later. But busy right now.

Okay finally listened to these songs after no one else did, so I forgot all about it. I'm curious to know where these tracks come from but I got to go for Hard Times which hits me a lot harder. Not that Carry Me Home isn't unbelievable in places, it is, but it wastes it's potential I find. It didn't need backing singers during the most heartbreaking part of the song, it just needed raw honesty. And the chorus isn't great. I can't post a round as the forum is glitching and I can't post any links but hopefully we'll sort this out soon or it'll just fix itself.

Both songs were recorded when Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar were in The Beach Boys, and both songs have never been officially released - though I have no idea why with Hard Times, which is brilliant and should have been on Holland. As for Carry Me Home, it's easily one of the most moving and heartbreaking songs by the band - which is also why it's never been officially released. It was considered for an official release a few years ago, but the band ultimately decided against it because they felt it was too dark and hit close to home. Which is not hard to see, considering it has Dennis singing lines like "please god, don't let me die", and knowing how his life ended. It's all very tragic really. This article is very much worth checking out: littlemissattitude.blogspot.com/2014/10/musicians-you-should-know-dennis-wilson.html
