In response to proffesorfloydian not getting the appeal of Monty Python, here is my opinion:
Comedy isn't an exact science and not everyone is going to like the exact same thing. But there is definitely a method to the madness. Many opinions have said you can't have comedy without offending somebody and that all comedy is based on misery. Well how does this apply to Looney tunes, Tom & Jerry, Abbot & Costello or The Three Stooges? They all seem pretty harmless right? Well these are all comedians who have extremely harsh arguments and/or violent punches thrown at one another. Houdini died from a blow to the stomach yet we don't think The Three Stooges are going too far with it do we? So there is a lot of basis on misery because according to some comedy is a defence mechanism and I agree. Without comedy, we'd all be vulnerable regarding the horrible things going on in the world. So as long as this comedy is coming from a place that is trying to make you laugh rather than a place that is trying to mean-spiritedly hurt you, there's nothing wrong with this. This is where Life of Brian comes in, one of the greatest satires of all time. However outside of that, aren't Monty Python more surreal and goofy than they are satirical and edgy? Yes, yes they are. However I think it needs to be understood that silliness comes from a place of self-defence as well. It's about defying expectations and giving you some utterly ridiculous and creative to get a response out of you. I think the television series Flying Circus and the astonishingly creative Holy Grail gets that down perfectly. You have no idea what the hell's going on and that's the entire appeal. Python are master craftsmanship of going into a world of bizarre nonsense. I get that it's not for everyone, but that's the shortened version of why I like it.
Any other Python fans out here? What are all your thoughts?
