This is a funny story, and entirely appropriate for this forum!
I had realized on Wednesday that I had won tickets for The Australian Pink Floyd Show - on Saturday, whew!
Turns out that right next door, there was an even higher profile concert, a band played there named... Metallica!
I had actually heard about this concert but hadn't made the connection until I saw all those Metallica shirts on the platform.
As you can guess, there was a lot of mayhem surrounding this thing, where are the entrances, where are my tickets, etc., but it all worked out after many annoyances (not to mention the railroadus interruptus, courtesy of a mind-changing train driver).
The view was good; the band had lasers, inflatable teachers, pigs and kangaroos (!) and a Mr Screen showing self-produced screen films (including some pretty political messages in "Pigs" - "Pig Brother is watching you" and "Vote Pig party to make Sheep great again"!). Add to this the shape of the venue and you felt like you were in a smaller-sized Earls Court. The male singer did a good job of impersonating the different vocal styles - and the female singers doing "Great Gig" were far better than what David had on his last tour! Though the guitarists were obviously not a patch of Mr Gilmour, they did a respectable job.
The negative aspect was the volume - ear-shattering and (imo) completely overdone. The drums in particular, you could hear every drum sound echoing from the back of the hall. Floyd music needs a more refined, subtle drum sound. Also, the intro/outro of "Sorrow" were just clipped beyond belief - you could barely hear the actualy notes being played due to the distortion being so incredibly egregious. Unpleasant. Generally, I thought the balance between keyboards and guitars (which was pretty good in the first part) had somehow gone missing in the second half, although "Fat Old Sun" with an organ jam was a pleasant surprise. As was the inclusion of a moment from my favourite version of "Comfortably Numb" - the sudden doubling-up of drums which I only know from one performance (Live at Knebworth 1990)! Oh, and there was even a mirror ball lowered during the guitar solo (it didn't open up though).
I could have done without the Kylie Minogue snippet...
