1967 was a brilliant year in music and showed the boundaries for rock music rapidly expanding. Here I compete Piper At The Gates of Dawn up against some serious competitors. Some loved, some despised, but all of them have a relevant place in the conversation.

All great albums, I'll go with Pink Floyd though, their sound appeals to me the most.

For me it's The Velvet Underground & Nico. Without question some of the most outstanding sequencing of music ever created.

Hmm... compared to the other albums on the poll I must say I've got two answers. First of all, I'd consider Piper to be the strongest as well as the most quintessential of the psychedelic albums. However.... if we're talking about the album that most accurately pointed towards the future direction of music, then it's gotta be Are You Experienced - with an honourable mention to the Velvet Underground album
Also I think this thread should be in the General Music Discussions section

Hendrix's guitar playing was revolutionary but nothing else on those albums aside from some of the production work did anything that ridiculously fresh. Great music, but guitar playing alone won't make you the biggest influence ever. i feel similarly about Pepper. It was very innovative in some aspects, but it's more the legacy of The Beatles that puts it so high up. The Velvet Underground are the reason for the existence of punk, indie, post-rock, noise rock, alternative, shoegaze, and maybe more genres and sub genres i'm forgetting. All of those genres trace their ancestry to the experimental rock of that album. Listen to Slint or My bloody Valentine or Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Nirvana or Pixies or Sonic Youth or Television or Patti Smith or The Violent Femmes. Hendrix is the most influential musician ever and The Beatles were the most influential band ever, but The Velvet Underground & Nico is the most influential album ever. As for moving the thread, I was torn on where to put it admittedly. I'll switch it now.

Still, one could argue that Hendrix (and his three Experience albums) has a significant influence on the burgeoning hard rock (or the more derisively cock rock) scene, and particularly among guitarists. Much of his work - particularly on that first album - influenced millions of people to take up the guitar. That said, I'd probably split the award between the two, since you have a point with the Velvet Underground

It's the most iconic definitely but a lot of people these days are more favouring towards Electric Ladyland.

Problem with that though is that it's a double album, and double albums are more often than not heavily flawed and unnecessarily overlong

Electric Ladyland is one of the most consistently strong double albums ever made. It's right on par with London Calling by The Clash for me.

Don't know much about these albums to comment, but I'll say Piper is the best one because I feel it was the defining sound of the psychdelic style.

Well for starters everyone is dead now. Everyone. (except Billy Cox, but he didn't come into the picture until 1969, well after their final studio album)

Well they took acid just as nearly every rock band in the 60s and 70s did. They may or may not have taken it just before performing but it rarely effected their performances. They had lots of live improvisation as well but that's irrelevant to the drugs as so did countless jazz musicians, and less rockers but still a fair amount.

I mean, yea, Jazz musicians improvised, but I thought the band improvised in a really crazy manner going absolutley nuts on stage. I'll have to listen to some though, I've always watned to get into them.
